The Effects of Smoking Marijuana

By Jacob Roach of Bongs Bay

The effects of smoking marijuana can be lumped into two categories. The effect it has on a person short term and the effect it has on them long term. There are several common links between the two but more often than not cannabis must be smoked on a frequent basis by a person before the short term effects translate into long term problems.

Let’s start off with the short term effects that cannabis smoking can have on a user. A smoker will generally find that one of the biggest effects is the inability to learn and process new information. This is partially due to the extremely shortened memory a smoker has after inhaling THC. New information is heard and then forgotten soon after. Some of the other effects include distortion of the senses such as touch, sound and taste. Other short term effects can include anxiety, increased heart rate, loss of motor coordination as well as trouble with thinking and problem solving. These effects can be magnified especially if marijuana is mixed with other drugs or alcohol. A smoker may also experience a dry mouth and a sore throat. Another study has also found that the risk of a heart attack more than quadruples in the first hour after smoking marijuana.

In terms of long term effects there are several things a long term cannabis smoker may experience. For one the risk of lung cancer becomes greatly increased from frequent marijuana smoking. Studies have shown that if somebody smokes five joints on average a week than they are taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as a person who smokes a whole packet of cigarettes a day. Research has also shown that long term marijuana smoking can create changes in the brain similar to the brain of someone who has abused other major drugs.

That all being said though there are however several positive effects of smoking marijuana. The most well known of those is pain relief, marijuana is often prescribed to patients in serious pain for medicinal use and often it has been found to be more effective than almost any other drug. Another effect, which although has no solid evidence is that it opens the mind and inspires creativity. The increased appetite that smoking marijuana can cause can also be seen as a positive effect particularly with people such as cancer patients who lose their appetite due to chemotherapy.

As you can see there are many effects that marijuana can have on a person, both short term and long term, both negative and positive. At the end of the day it is up to the individual to assess their situation, be aware of the risks and make their own choice on whether smoking cannabis is something they should do.

I am wondering how they figured this out. How many people did they include in this study and how many had heart attacks?

I can see it the TV commercials now. If you smoked marijuana and had a heart attack call the Law Offices of We Sue for anything, LLC. You may be entitled to monetary compensation.

This is all nonsense. I know someone who did a philosophy/linguistics degree while smoking dope. The only thing it seemed to have problems with was formal logic, all of her essays were accompanied with a joint. You don't know what you're talking about. There is also NO proven link with lung cancer, all so called evidence includes tobacco, a known carcinogen. All the dope smokers I know are head and shoulders above the average in cognition, understanding, empathy, sense of humour and ability to learn fast and apply it. You have just re-hashed [!] this from some anti-cannabis diatribe full of lies. Try experiencing it yourself, nothing like first hand knowledge to cast away the prejudices and ignorance.
